Miriam and Dave Lapp are an endearing young couple with four adorable children, including an energetic puppy named Moe. Dave works and owns part of his construction company.
They belong to Pennsylvania's "Old Order" Amish community, in which all forms of technology such as smartphones or cars are prohibited - though Dave gets rides to work using one - yet by permitting themselves to be filmed they risk incurring the disapproval of church elders and risk having any future children taken away from them by them.
Miriam then persuades several friends of their traditional life-style to participate, which becomes clear when several younger Amish like Miriam Lapps risk excommunication after opting to change their baptism to allow more open evangelical views - creating the need for community change within which to reside. Finally, as Miriam completes their dream to own their own farm.
