Badhaai Do is the story of Shardul, a gay man who works as a police officer. Suman, a lesbian woman teacher at a physical education school. Both are under pressure from society to conform to expectations. Shardul is a gay policeman and Suman is a female physical education teacher.
Their families, both unaware of the truth about their sexual orientations, are anxious for them to marry. Shardul, Suman and their respective families enter into marriages of convenience to avoid judgement and appease the family.
The unusual situation of the couple becomes more complicated when Suman’s girlfriend Rimjhim moves in. They are forced to keep up a façade of happiness while they navigate their own journeys of acceptance and self-discovery.
This film examines love, family and identity as well as societal expectations. The film highlights challenges LGBTQ+ people face in a conservative culture and the courage required to live authentically.
