Bridge of Spies is the story of James B. Donovan. He's an insurance attorney who finds himself in the middle of the Cold War. He is tasked in 1957 with protecting Rudolf Abel - a Soviet spy who has been captured - and ensuring that he gets a fair hearing despite intense public pressure.

Donovan is distinguished by his unwavering dedication to the due process. In a complicated legal case, he prioritizes ethical principles and is often at odds with other people.

Donovan, whose tensions are rising, is hired by the CIA to carry out a sensitive mission. He must negotiate the swap of Abel with Francis Gary Powers. Powers was an American spy pilot whose U-2 spy aircraft had been shot down in Soviet airspace.

Donovan is taken on an arduous journey to the shadows of the Iron Curtain where he has to navigate a murky world filled with espionage, international diplomacy and danger. While trying to return both men safely, he faces many dangers.

Bridge of Spies, a Cold War thriller, explores themes of humanity and justice as well as the importance of maintaining principles in spite of hardship.
