Captain Sam Cahill, an upstanding family man and father to two, has recently been deployed to Afghanistan while his troubled brother Tommy recently got released from jail after serving his term and recently got paroled from imprisonment. Their lives offer stark differences.
Tragedies strike when Sam's helicopter crashes and it is presumed dead; this leaves his wife Grace and their daughters reeling with grief.
Tommy attempts to redeem himself by helping Grace care for the house and children after Sam has moved out, creating an unlikely bond between them in doing so.
Sam isn't dead - instead he's been held captive and experienced horrific things during captivity; when he finally returns home he remains traumatized and struggles to adjust back into society.
Grace finds herself torn between loving Sam and Tommy; Sam's posttraumatic stress disorder creates tension within their family unit.
