The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced two decades of horrific violence. Rape has been used as a weapon to destroy communities and gain access to precious minerals, garnering it the name "the worst place on Earth for women." "City of Joy" paints an altogether different portrait.
This film follows Jane, an undergraduate student attending a center where women who have experienced unbelievable abuse come together and form leadership teams. We meet the founders: an esteemed Congolese Doctor, an activist Congolese national and an unconventional New York playwright; together they work toward demanding hope in what could otherwise seem an overwhelming situation. Joy meets heartache throughout as these individuals band together for hope in what may otherwise seem hopeless circumstances.
