Tony Wendice is a former tennis player living a seemingly happy marriage to Margot; however, when he discovers she has been seeing another man named Mark Halliday. Tony takes great offense at this development in their relationship.
Tony feels betrayed, so he devises an elaborate plot. He wants Margot out of the picture so he can have all her money, setting up schemes where someone else may harm Margot while he and friends are away to make it look as though no one could possibly have carried it out himself.
Tony's plan takes an unexpected twist when Margot rebels and things quickly spiral downwards, forcing Tony to think quickly in order to cover his tracks and appear innocent before things escalate further.
A clever police inspector in this film unravels an exciting crime mystery as she seeks to uncover exactly what has occurred. Did Tony get away with his scheme or will it be discovered soon enough?
