Captain Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), having been injured during battle, receives an offer to be promoted and lead 54th Infantry Regiment as colonel.
He works closely with Major Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes).
The regiment comprises free Black men and former slaves alike, such as Trip (Denzel Washington), an accomplished soldier; and John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman), an insightful former slave with over twenty-seven years' experience.
The 54th Infantry Regiment faces discrimination both from Confederates who view black soldiers as inferior and within its ranks where some officers question their fighting ability.
At first, they are assigned menial tasks which increase their desire for battle.
Shaw strives to transform his regiment into an unmatched fighting force despite all obstacles.
The 54th finally gets their chance to fight during an assault on Fort Wagner, an outpost held by Confederates forces.
Film depicts the deadly realities of war as an unshakable regiment valiantly charges uphill under heavy fire, against heavy odds.
The film culminates in the Battle of Fort Wagner, in which 54th suffers heavy casualties; nonetheless, their courage and perseverance earn them respect from both allies and enemies alike.
This film honors the 54th Massachusetts and their contributions in ending slavery and shaping American history.
