Story follows two parallel narratives as Chan Wing-Yan (Tony Leung), an idealistic police cadet recruited by Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong) into becoming an undercover cop within Hong Kong organized crime group Triads; at the same time Lau Kin-Ming (Andy Lau), one of Triads members planted by Hon Sam (Eric Tsang) is planted as a mole in police force by Hon Sam ruthlessly boss Hon Sam to become undercover cop within Triads ranks; during its thrilling climax unveils moles identities as identities of moles are revealed and culminates into high stakes confrontation that will determine who survives and which side will succeed!
Both Chan and Lau spend years deep undercover, gradually rising through their respective organizations' ranks. Chan deals with the stress and violence associated with Triad life while Lau manages police work complexities. After 10 years have gone by, however, both Chan and Lau find their undercover missions at risk of exposure; both fight to identify one another while trying to escape with their lives intact.The film explores themes of identity and loyalty as Chan and Lau become deeper undercover - as true selves become blurred against assumed identities as their time together progresses further undercover.
