In IO, Earth has become uninhabitable due to environmental degradation. Most humans have left for Jupiter's moon Io as their temporary refuge; however, Sam chooses not to relocate with most.
Sam believes there may be an approach to restoring Earth's ecosystem, so she devotes herself to researching plants and insects which might survive under such harsh conditions. Living alone at high-altitude observatory, she collects supplies scavenged off Io as she sends messages back home with Elon who lives there already.
Micah comes crashing to Sam's observatory looking to catch a final evacuation shuttle out to Io, while also searching for her father; an astrophysicist who believed in Earth's future and believed his son should pursue science as his profession.
Sam and Micah embark upon an adventurous quest together, in the hope that Micah's father's research could hold the key to saving Earth. Along the way they face toxic environmental dangers as well as moral quandaries related to saving it from destruction.
