Fane, the protagonist in this novella, finds himself frustrated by constant arguments with an upstairs neighbor and decides to intervene, meeting Lilas who seems to be suffering as a result of abuse from said neighbor. They bond quickly before Fane learns of his mother's passing shortly thereafter.
Fane is gifted an unexpected inheritance; a small house between two garages. He invites Lilas, seeking escape from an abusive relationship, to move in together at this new place; his brother Mo, suffering intellectual disability due to a brain surgery procedure also joins them as a housemate.
A trio tries to start over in their small house together; but their summer is far from easy - with challenges including extreme summer heat, an indifferent community that does not accept strangers, and potential for conflict as they navigate their unique living situation.
