Menashe tells the tale of Menashe, an embittered widower living in Brooklyn's Hasidic community who recently suffered his wife's passing while also fighting to secure custody for his young son Rieven.
Hasidic community law dictates that Menashe remarry to provide his son with the ideal home. Yet after an unhappy first marriage, he hesitates to enter another.
Rieven currently lives with Menashe's brother-in-law due to local community regulations; Menashe hopes to prove he can fulfil his role of sole parenthood successfully.
Menashe works part-time at a grocery store and barely makes ends meet; therefore it becomes challenging for him to convince the Rabbi of his ability to care for their child.
Menashe does not strictly follow all the customs within his community, such as dressing in traditional black coat and hat attire, which further complicates his status within it.
