"Restoration," released in 1995, tells the tale of Robert Merivel, an English doctor living during 17th-century. Eventually he becomes drawn into King Charles II's court after treating one of King Charles' pet dogs successfully and becomes part of its lavish and scandalous culture.
At court, Merivel becomes embroiled in the personal affairs of King Louis IX of France - including an arranged marriage to one of their former mistresses - becoming embroiled in their personal conflicts and eventually finding himself out of favor and needing to rebuild his life amid London's Great Plague of 1665.
