Song of the South is an American musical fantasy drama film produced and released by Walt Disney Productions in 1946, inspired by Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus stories which adapt African American folktales.
Story Summary: Johnny moves to his grandmother's plantation in the American South following his parents' separation and forms an unlikely bond with an elderly Black man named Uncle Remus who introduces him to stories featuring Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear that help teach life lessons as well as provide relief for personal challenges he may be encountering himself. These tales help Johnny navigate life more successfully while providing him an outlet from stress.
It has proven controversial since its release and has drawn considerable criticism due to its depiction of race relations and stereotyping; yet many admire it for its music, animation and performances.
