After burning Rome, Emperor Nero decides that all Christians were responsible and issues an order for all of them to be captured and sent directly into an arena for trial. Two older Christians were caught, when Marcus, one of Rome's top military officials came upon them and saved their lives by intervening and freeing them instead of hauling off to be put through trial in front of everyone present in an arena.
Marcus meets Mercia, their stepdaughter. Immediately attracted by Mercia and freeing them both from slavery, Marcus pursues Mercia which gets him into hot water both with Emperor (for being too accommodating with Christians) and Empress who loves and has feelings for him simultaneously.
