T.S. Spivet is an imaginative 10-year-old boy living on a ranch in Montana who exhibits both an active imagination and talent for invention. His eccentric family includes his cowboy father with dreams of the past; his scientist mother who studies beetles; and an older sister aspiring to becoming beauty queen.
T.S. invents a perpetual motion machine that earns him an award from the Smithsonian Institution; unfortunately when trying to contact them they mistake him as being an adult so instead decides to flee home and travel across country to collect their award himself.
As T.S. travels and meets many interesting characters along his path to personal and familial growth, he learns more about himself, his family, and deals with grief over losing a twin brother.
Ingeniously constructed inventions include T.S.'s perpetual motion machine and his map of the world composed entirely of railroad tracks.
T.S' journey across America is packed with surprises and challenges; meeting all kinds of interesting characters while witnessing breathtaking sites along the way.
Characters in the film range from T.S.'s eccentric family members, as well as those he meets along his travels, to memorable encounters he experiences along his path.
