Joe and Paul struggle to make ends meet as independent truck drivers, continually being pursued by loan sharks while yearning to own their own rig. Joe convinces Paul to start their own trucking company but their efforts are threatened by financial strain as well as competition from an unscrupulous rival. Additionally, Joe falls for Cassie while Paul picks up another hitchhiker named Cassie which adds romance into an otherwise challenging journey.
Paul becomes too exhausted at the wheel to avoid an accident which results in Paul losing an arm, their truck being destroyed, and dreams dashed. With no options left open to them, Joe and Paul find work at Ed Carlsen's trucking company instead. But Lana quickly develops feelings for Joe that lead her to murder her husband for him; then when Joe rejected Lana's advances she frame him for it instead; Joe must now clear his name through Cassie.
