Beginning its incomplete trilogy telling the history of Greek people. Beginning with immigrants from Odessa arriving near Thessaloniki. Led by charismatic Spyros they establish new settlement in a river delta near Thessaloniki.
Spyros' son Alexis falls for Eleni, an orphan from Odessa. A strong love affair occurs between these teenagers; an unexpected pregnancy results which has to be given over to foster care; but love seems unlikely since Spyros wants Eleni as his bride instead of marrying his foster daughter as was initially planned.
As their father persecutes them, Alexis and Eleni decide to flee the village together, living as exiles until Alexis joins a band headed for America while Eleni gains custody over both children. Angelopoulos explores, through this film and previous ones, the sacrifice made by civilians as result of workers demonstrations held during 1935; rule of Metaxas' fascist junta forcing forced migration; as well as civil war which ensues from 1944-1949.
