As Andrew strives to meet Fletcher's expectations of him as a drummer, his life becomes consumed with drumming; at times neglecting relationships and well-being on his quest for musical excellence. The film explores themes such as ambition, sacrifice, the cost of following dreams and the complex relationship between teacher and pupil.
